Ensemble Studio 6 performed four works of modern music by Luciano Berio and Franco Donatoni, some of which are today considered as classsics, due to their pioneering elements and characteristics. The choice of pieces also had its root in the fact that many of such works had never been performed in Serbia before, and this is true for three pieces in this programme (Sequenza II, Small I and Differences).

The programme includes number one and number two, out of fourteen Sequenzas, written by Berio, which stand out as seminal soloistic works of European avangarde in 1960s. Sequenza I for flute and Sequenza II for harp, with its extended use of unusual techniques at the time, paved the way for his later solos for voice, piano, violin, clarinet, trumpet, accordion etc. The harp solo is still used as a reference for many extended harp techniques, and a piece that stands at the forefront of modern repertoire for the instrument.

Flutist Snježana Pavićević  opened the programme with her performance of Sequenza I, after which a trio of flute, clarinet and harp performed Small I by Franco Donatoni. It is interesting to note that this piece, composed in 1981, also had its background in the three independent soloistic works for above instruments (Marches, Nidi and Clair), which Donatoni composed amidst his own cycle of soloistic music. Sequenza II for harp was performed by the artistic director of the ensemble, Milana Zarić.

The programme was concluded by a seminal early electroacoustic piece, Berio’s Différences, for flute, clarinet, viola, cello, harp and tape. The musicians S.Pavićević, M.Samoran, B.Brezovac, C.Jahn and M.Zarić, were joined by R.Barrett for sound projection, I.Marković as conductor and Incredible Bob, who embelished the video recording of the piece, with his wacky animations, especially during electronics’ solos.

The programme was performed live in front of a small audience, several times, during the course of a day on 14 October, in different halls of the beautiful gallery Matica Srpska in Novi Sad. This was all due to pandemic restrictions. It was not possible to have audience for the performance at Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade, so the programme was recorded, edited and subsequently performed during the online edition of Festival BUNT 8.0 in December 2020.

The project was supported by the Ministry of Culture and Information of Serbia, the Italian Cultural Centre in Belgrade, the Gallery Matica Srpska in Novi Sad and Universal Edition.
