ERNŐ KIRÁLY (1919-2007) CENTENARY OF BIRTH

The Studio6 Ensemble marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer and ethno-musicologist Ernő Király with a concert at the Grand Hall of Collegium Hungaricum in Gračanička on February 14, 2019. The ensemble held workshops open to the public with guests Katalin Ladik and Zsolt Sőrés. The aim of the project was to promote the creativity of this unique musical personality in the area of ​​the former Yugoslavia, as well as to encourage new artistic creation for authentic Király instruments - a citrophone and tablaphone, currently on loan from the Cultural Center in Bajót, Hungary.
Participants Katalin Ladik, Richard Barrett, Zsolt Sőrés, Nenad Marković and Milana Zarić performed a full-length program consisting of Király graphic scores, as well as open solos for harp, tablophone and citrophone, and the audience also heared a piece by Richard Barrett Codex XXI. inspired by Király’s legacy.
 
The program also included works Sonata Geometrica, Actiones, Sonetto, Black and White, to Kandinsky, Phoenix, and Variations on the letter B.
 
Before the concert, participants gave a short lecture on Kiraly's music and their individual and collaborative work on it.

Katalin Ladik and Zsolt Sőrés have both worked closely with Király in the past on various projects related to his music. They spoke about their experiences with a unique musical personality, such as Ernő Király. Topics were his unique instruments citraphone and tablahone, then compositions based on the tradition of Hungarian folk music, as well as avant-garde graphic scores and approaches to improvisation.
Zsolt talked about the compositions that Király wrote for his trio in 1999 (Flora XIV), then his tour with the composer, as well as about Király the improviser on his citrophone.
Katalin presented a vocal interpretation of Ernő Király's graphic score as well as his own visual poetry.
Richard Barrett talked about the interpretation of graphic notation in general, and how ideas regarding temporal and spatial musical notation might relate to the performance of Király's score.
The ideas and music that had been discussed had an application during the rehearsals the ensemble held after the talk.
Presentations were in English and Serbian language.

Katlin Ladik
The first wife of Ernő Király is one of the artists who had a decisive influence on the emancipation of the artistic climate in the former Yugoslavia, as well as its opening to the experimental and innovative tendencies present on the international art scene in the period that preceded and beyond 1968.
The work of this artist, primarily her verbo-visual research (sound performances, video and audio cassettes and LP records), body performance, as well as extensive and significant literary, as well as work in the field of alternative theater, have been recognized and recognized in international frames. Katalin Ladik was the recipient of the 2016 LennonOno Grant for Piece Award.
Her artistic and visual works and performances, exhibited and performed in major museums and galleries around the world, as well as her theatrical performances and the impact she has had on the entire generations of young artists in the former Yugoslavia, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, put her artistic personalities in order already almost mythical avant-garde figures throughout the Central European region.
 
Zsolt Sőrés
Zsolt Sőrésis is a Hungarian improviser, publisher, performance artist and concept artist.
Zsolt plays a five-stringed viola and cultivates a particular interest in frontier art areas and practices. He has worked with film directors and video artists, choreographers, theater directors and visual artists. He is employed by the independent Tilos Radio (Forbidden Radio) and is the director of Bo Wave's new music program. He is the Artistic Director of Relative Cross Hearings - International Independent Contemporary Music Meetings in Budapest. Since 2005 he has been the editor of a series of books on contemporary music by Szünetjel Könyvek. Zsolt has published two books of poetry.
He is a member of various music and multimedia formations, including the trio with Franz Hautziger and Isabelle Duthoit, a duet with Rhodri Davies, and the band Spiritus Noister (with Katalin Ladik and Endre Szkarosi).
For many years he is a connoisseur of music and music artist Ernő Király.
