 - Three Medieval Songs -
 - Tragoedia -

About the programme:

A chamber music classic, Introduction et Allegro by Maurice Ravel, from 1905, was included in this programme for its inventive timbral combinations and seemingly open form. One of the rare recordings left to us, which were  made  during composer’s lifetime (picture above), show the tendency to ’free up’ the strict sonata form, in which this piece was in fact written.  Ravel’s virtuosity when it comes to timbral sonorities, served as inspiration to many composers of later generations, including Birtwistle, who used timbre as significant musical building element.

Tragoedia, another classic, but from a later era, from 1965, for chamber ensemble, represents one of the central works of European avangarde. This abstract music theatre piece had its Serbian premiere with this performance. Is was inspired and structured according to the principles of Ancient Greek tragedy.  Omitting the text, the instruments are treated as characters from a play, and are placed on stage accordingly. The whole ensemble rarely plays tutti, usually small groups of soloists are in dialogue, alternating between the roles of protagonists and antagonists, thus creating highly original sound colours. The antique drama is simulated by the so called chorus parts, together with three central characters, which are horn, cello and harp.

Three medieval songs in this programme have been realized in October 2021 for  ten instruments, string quartet, harp and wind quintet. Three-part and four-part melodies, originally composed by French composers Dufay, de Machaut and Binchois in 14-15. century, have been arranged by Richard Barrett, especially for this occassion. The composer used the large ensemble as a basis for constant manipulation of timbre - the intent was to bring out the contemporary sensibility of these ancient tunes.

This programme was part of Ensemble Studio 6 2021 concert season and supported by the Ministry of Culture and Information of Serbia, as well as Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra.
